Privacy Policy — Atticus

Last updated: [Date]

1. Introduction

This privacy policy explains how Atticus handles your data. Atticus is a Chrome extension that helps parents and guardians monitor web browsing on shared computers and receive an email alert when content associated with toxic masculinity is detected.

The parent or guardian who installs and configures the extension is the user this policy is addressed to. The extension is not directed at children, but it monitors browsing activity on a device shared with children.

If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at: henryplumridge@hotmail.co.uk

2. What Data We Collect

We collect only the following — nothing more:

Your name and email address
You enter these manually in the extension's settings. Your name is used to personalise alert emails. Your email address is used solely to send you those alerts.
The URL of a flagged page
When the extension detects a keyword match on a web page, it records the address of that page.
The keyword that triggered the alert
The specific word from our list that was matched on the page.
The date and time of the alert
So you know when the flagged content was encountered.

We do not record your general browsing history. We do not capture full page content. We do not collect passwords, cookies, search history, or any other browsing data. The extension scans page content in real time on your device to check for keyword matches, but that content is never recorded or transmitted unless a match is found.

3. How We Use Your Data

We use the data we collect for one purpose only: to send you an alert email when flagged content is detected, containing the page URL, the matched keyword, and the time it occurred.

We do not use your data for advertising, analytics, profiling, or any other purpose.

4. How the Extension Works

The extension reads the content of web pages in real time on any active browser tab. It compares that content against a built-in list of keywords. This analysis happens entirely on your device — page content is not sent anywhere unless a keyword match is found.

When a match is found, the URL, keyword, and timestamp are passed to a third-party email service (see Section 6) to deliver your alert notification.

5. Data Storage, Retention and Security

Local storage
Your name, email address, and a log of flagged alerts are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage. This data is not uploaded to any server we control.
Retention
Flagged alert data is automatically deleted after 30 days. Your name and email address are stored until you remove them from the extension's settings or uninstall the extension. Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data immediately.
Security limitation to be aware of
Data stored in Chrome's local storage is accessible to anyone using the same browser profile. If you share a browser profile with the person whose browsing you are monitoring, we strongly recommend creating a separate browser profile for yourself and installing the extension there.

6. Third-Party Services

To deliver alert emails, the extension uses [Email Service Name — e.g. SendGrid / EmailJS]. When an alert is triggered, your email address, the flagged URL, the matched keyword, and the timestamp are transmitted to this service for the sole purpose of delivering your notification.

We recommend reviewing their privacy policy at [link].

We do not use any analytics tools, crash reporting services, or any other third-party services.

7. Your Rights Under UK GDPR

If you are based in the United Kingdom or European Union, you have the following rights:

To exercise any of these rights, email us at: henryplumridge@hotmail.co.uk

We will respond within 30 days.

8. Our Lawful Basis for Processing Your Data

Under UK GDPR we are required to state our lawful basis for processing personal data. We process your data on the basis of legitimate interests — specifically, the legitimate interest of a parent or guardian in protecting a child from harmful content on a shared device.

You provide your own name and email address voluntarily for this purpose, and the data we collect is limited to the minimum necessary to deliver the service.

9. Children's Privacy

This extension is for parents and guardians only. Children do not interact with it directly and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

The extension monitors browsing activity on a shared device, which may include browsing by children. This is carried out entirely at the direction of the parent or guardian who has installed and configured the extension. The parent or guardian is responsible for ensuring the extension is used lawfully and appropriately.

10. Changes to This Policy

If we make changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. We encourage you to check back periodically. Continued use of the extension after any changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
